Ferret Care Information For
Rockstars
So you want a pet ferret or maybe you already own one? How
much
will you need to put in to provide a nourishing environment for this
amazing animal? Well, you've come to the coolest source for
ferret care information on the web...so let's get started with a little
history lesson.Ferrets come from the weasel family and are natural hunters that have been used to hunt rodents. Domesticated for over 2000 years, ferrets are still not legal in some areas. These little fuzzies are very independent in nature and need to be disciplined early to be socialized and litter trained.
They can carry a musky odor, and in addition to providing him with the necessary vaccinations, you will probably want to have him spayed or neutered to control odor. But ferrets will always carry some musk. You ok with that?
Ferrets need a specialized diet. And this is important because ferrets cannot digest most foods out there. A ferret's nutrition should come from fats and meat based proteins. So a high quality cat or ferret food with at least 40% protein and 20% fat is a must. Ferrets eat in small amounts up to ten times daily so fresh water needs to be available 24/7. Because ferrets can sleep up to 20 hours a day, your ferret needs to have a crib of his own. A high quality cage with solid flooring, ferret bed and litter pad is basically all you need. A good ferret bed can be a ferret hammock or a shoebox with some old shirts. Ferrets love to be in dark cozy places and will make the best out of their sleeping situations. You should be able to hose and scrub down your cage and throw the beddings in a washer and dryer with ease.

Ferrets are very curious animals. They take exploration and play to a whole new level. They can go on for some time investigating new things. This is a quality that makes your little fuzzy unique, but it can also put your little explorer in dangerous situations. This means you need to ferret proof your home. You need to take the time and make sure your ferret can't escape or get hurt. Block all holes leading out of your house or into anything dangerous and secure anything that can be toppled over. Any hole larger than the size of a quarter needs to be closed off. Ferrets will do anything to get what they want. They will climb, squeeze and grab anything that gets attention. Chewing can be a big problem if not controlled early. Ferrets commonly get their intestines blocked because of chewing the wrong things, and believe me, this can be a nightmare. And finally, like a lot of other pets out there, you should play with your ferret everyday. They are social by nature but getting them used to you and other people is a must. Feed your ferret by hand and handle him for little bits of a time in the beginning. Be patient and it will pay off. If you have any other pets in your household, ferrets need to be introduced to them slowly. Keep your ferret in a cage while you introduce your other pets. Remember, ferrets are hunters by nature and having a couple of pet rats around can be bad news.
So would I recommend owning a ferret? My answer is a big emphatic "YES"...ferrets are the most interesting animals that you will ever own. I pretty much guarantee it. They have contagious personalities that will bring joy into your homes and souls.
